Council Tax by Band

Every band for your council — a year and a month — plus what one band lower would save and the 1991 or 2003 value range each band was drawn around. Published figures for 2026/27.

The billing authority on your bill. Figures are the average Band D for the billing authority’s area including parish, county, police, fire and combined-authority precepts, for two adults with no discounts.

Where these figures come from

Bands are fixed ratios of band D, set in law: A is 6/9 of D, B 7/9, C 8/9, E 11/9, F 13/9, G 15/9 and H 18/9. Band A pays two thirds of band D; band H pays double it. That is why a band is worth real money — and why one band down is the same one-ninth step wherever you live, scaled by your council’s band D.

  • England: Bands A–H are derived from Band D using the ratios in s.5(1) Local Government Finance Act 1992. Council Tax levels set by local authorities in England 2026 to 2027, Table 10 (local authority level data) (Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), 25 March 2026).
  • Wales: Bands A–I are the figures StatsWales publishes for each authority; they follow the ratios in the Council Tax (Valuation Bands) (Wales) Order 2003. Council tax levels by billing authority and band (StatsWales) (Welsh Government (Llywodraeth Cymru), 24 March 2026).
  • Figures are the average Band D for the billing authority’s area including parish, county, police, fire and combined-authority precepts, for two adults with no discounts. A parish with its own precept can sit a little above or below the area average, so check your own bill for the exact figure.

Before you challenge anything

Challenging is free. You do it yourself on GOV.UK, at gov.uk/challenge-council-tax-band. Nobody has to pay anyone to submit a challenge.

Bands can go up as well as down. The Valuation Office Agency can raise your band, and can look at neighbouring homes while it is there. Of the 39,590 challenges the VOA resolved in 2023-24, 27% ended in a reduction, 65% in no change and under 1% in an increase. By route, 19% of formal proposals and 41% of band reviews changed a band. That is why the checker insists on two independent checks before it calls a case strong.

CourtPilot is independent. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or acting for the Valuation Office Agency, HMRC, the Welsh Government or any council. These tools are information, not legal or financial advice.

Want the evidence pack, the right-route decision and help with the VOA’s reply? That is the Council Tax Band Challenge — but run the free checker first, because it will tell you plainly if you do not have a case.
